Steel making process

Steel making is to use melting furnace or smelting furnace to get qualified liquid steel, then cast into various dimension of billet, bloom, slab as per exact demand of downstream industries. Its raw material can be scrap, pig iron, sponge iron, mixture according to local source situation, the required steel making equipment varies from the raw material type and the required quality of finished product, it can be divided into induction furnace, electric furnace furnace, VOD, AOD, VD, converter/basic oxygen furnace and so on. And meet the production of plain carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel and so on.

MET is able to provide the design and supply turnkey steel making plant solution as followings:

Part 1 Primary steel making solutions

Converter/basic oxygen furnace
Receive the liquid iron from upstream iron making plant, mix scrap to make steel. Converter steel making is the common process by blowing oxygen into the furnace to generate chemical heat, converter steel making does not require additional heating, just because the molten iron itself has high temperature, and its internal oxidation reaction continues to heat up. This reaction comes from the silicon, carbon and oxygen in the molten iron, and it does not need to be heated by fuel. This method reduces energy and consumption greatly, so it is widely used in steel making.

Based on refractory, gas blowing method and gas type, there are different kinds of converters for you to select. The basic oxygen top blown and top and bottom blown converter is the most commonly used steel making equipment because of its high production speed, large output, high single furnace output, low cost and less investment.

Induction furnace
The induction furnace is an electric furnace that uses materials to induce electric heating effects to heat and melt materials. The main components of the induction furnace are sensors, induction coil, furnaces, power supplies, capacitors and control systems.

Induction furnace steel making process is one kind of mature and most used solution to meet the production needs of plain carbon steel. The process flow is also short and simple to operate, equipped with CCM to produce billet.

The heating of induction furnace is fast, and it has high thermal efficiency because its heat is generated inside the charge. The composition and temperature of the molten steel in the induction furnace steelmaking are relatively uniform. Due to the effect of electromagnetic force, the inductor and the molten steel repel each other, so that the molten steel in the center part of the crucible rises, and the molten steel in the edge part of the crucible drops, resulting in the phenomenon of circulating movement of the molten steel. This electromagnetic stirring effect makes the chemical composition and temperature of molten steel in the molten pool tend to be uniform, and is conducive to the floating of non-metallic inclusions in molten steel.

Induction furnace steelmaking requires scrap of certain quality. This method is weak in metallurgical reaction ability and emphasize on remelting, so it needs better furnace charge of good material, less rust oil, relatively small lump.

Electric arc furnace
Electric arc furnace smelts scrap steel or sponge iron (DRI) or pig iron by arc radiation, temperature convection and heat conduction. During most of the time when melting the charge, the high temperature heat source is surrounded by the charge, and the heat loss caused by the high temperature exhaust gas is relatively small. The electric arc furnace steelmaking process is short (the industry calls it a short process), the construction investment is small, the land area is small, and it does not need to rely on the complex iron making system like the converter steel making (the industry calls it a long process).

Electric arc furnace steelmaking does not have high requirement regarding the raw material, and nearly all scrap steel can be used as raw material. According to the steel grade need, it is possible to equip LF, AOD, VOD, VD with EAF for meeting various steel grade production.

Part 2 Secondary steel making solutions

Secondary steel making process is usually performed in the ladle. Like ladle refining furnace, AOD, VOD, VD. Ladle furnace process is the external refining process in which heating is realized by electric arc in a special ladle in vacuum. Besides primary steel making solutions, MET supplies complete secondary steel making solutions, to meet various demand.

Ladle refining furnace
After tapping of steel from a primary steel making furnace, for making higher quality steel, steel will then be transferred into the ladle refining furnace for further refining, chemical adjustment and inclusion modifications.

Continuous casting machine
In this process, the molten steel is cast into a cooled mold causing a thin steel shell to solidify. The shell strand is withdrawn using guided rolls and fully cooled and solidified. The obtained product after continuous casting is semi-products - slabs, blooms and billets.
